It is March again and not only is this my birthday month, but it is the National Women’s History Month, with March 8
th being International Women’s Day.
International Women's Day is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.
International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. And here’s an interesting piece of history…there have been claims that in ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war during the French Revolution. A pretty novel tactic if you ask me, but probably not effective in today’s modern times.
As women we are all members of this powerful sorority. A sorority that serves as the foundation of our families whose strength and compassion have a global impact. Take time out this month to celebrate the special women in your life, whether it is a mother, sister, aunt, niece or friend. Celebrate women, celebrate you, and stay connected!
