Tech Girls

For many years now, women have held a minority of the high-status, high-salary jobs in computer and technology-related fields. And although we are making inroads, various factors account for women’s under-representation in these professions. Adolescent girls generally use computer games, which are primarily targeted at male audiences. Adolescent girls also have a reduced level of computer confidence and experience a gradual loss of interest in computers as they mature.

Another major cause of young women’s lower interest in computer and related technology fields is that designers generally do not understand young people’s experiences and perspectives. The result is computer software, websites, and other electronic information resources of limited interest to young people, and especially young women.

The good news is that there are organizations out there that are striving to make a difference. Expanding Your Horizons, is a non-profit organization whose network of members consists of educators, scientists, mathematicians, parents, community leaders, and government and corporate representatives. Their mission is to encourage young women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Through their programs, they provide role models and hands-on activities for middle and high school girls. The ultimate goal is to motivate girls to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st Century challenges.

Another organization with a similar goal is Girls Go Tech. They encourage girls to become interested in math, science, and technology as well. The website also contains games, career information, and other resources.

Tech-savvy divas start young and then blossom into Network Administrators, Engineers, Math Professors and CIOs. Continue to encourage your daughters, nieces and other young women to pursue their passion. Stay motivated and stay connected.
